Our Curriculum

At Laurel Academy, we believe that a strong curriculum should do more than prepare learners for examinations , it should equip them with the knowledge, skills, confidence and critical-thinking abilities they need to succeed in an ever-changing world. Our academic programme is primarily guided by the Cambridge curriculum, which we value for its strong emphasis on academic depth, independent thinking, problem-solving and the practical application of knowledge. Cambridge encourages learners to understand concepts rather than simply memorise information, helping them become confident, curious and independent learners. We complement the Cambridge approach with selected elements and best practices from the IEB educational approach. This blended model allows us to draw on the strengths of both systems while creating a learning experience that is relevant to the South African context and responsive to the individual needs of our learners. Our curriculum focuses on developing more than academic achievement. Learners are encouraged to communicate effectively, think critically, conduct research, solve problems, apply their knowledge and engage meaningfully with the world around them. We also place strong emphasis on literacy, numeracy, digital skills, creativity and the development of independent study habits. At Laurel Academy, we carefully consider the needs and abilities of each learner when implementing our curriculum. Our goal is to provide a structured yet flexible educational experience that challenges learners academically while ensuring that they receive the support they need to thrive. We believe that the best education prepares learners not only to pass examinations, but to ask questions, think independently, embrace challenges and become lifelong learners. At Laurel Academy, we bring together the academic rigour of Cambridge, the strengths of the IEB approach and our commitment to personalised learning to create an educational experience that prepares learners for both further study and the world beyond the classroom.
